Statistical analysis for bachelor’s and master’s theses

Have survey data but are unsure which tests to use or how to describe the results? I can prepare the dataset, carry out the statistical analysis, and help you understand the findings. I select chi-square tests, Student’s t-tests, correlations, and other methods to suit your research questions and university guidelines.

Data, statistical tests, and results you can understand

You have survey results. I can help you understand what they show.

Has your supervisor asked for a chi-square test, a correlation, or a group comparison, and you are unsure where to start? I can help choose an analysis that fits your research questions, carry out the calculations, and explain what the results mean for your thesis.

Statistical analysis for a master’s or bachelor’s thesis can cover one research question or the entire quantitative section. Send your data and guidelines. I will check what can be investigated using the data and suggest a specific scope.

You do not have to choose the test yourself

I select a method to suit the data type, study design, and hypotheses, and explain why it fits your question.

An explanation alongside the numbers

I relate the results to your research questions, making the analysis easier to understand and discuss with your supervisor.

You know what you are commissioning

Before starting, we agree on the calculations, the format of the material, the price, and the deadline.

What can statistical analysis include?

Choose help with one stage or combine data preparation, statistical tests, and a write-up of the results within one agreed scope.

Preparing the dataset

I check response coding, missing data, duplicates, and values that need clarification. I organise multiple-response questions and calculate scale scores using the scoring key you provide.

Benefit: calculations use a checked dataset, with decisions about the data documented.

Descriptive statistics and tests

I prepare the appropriate counts, percentages, means and standard deviations, or medians and interquartile ranges. I check assumptions and select tests for comparisons and associations.

Benefit: you learn what the data show and how far they support your hypotheses.

Tables, charts, and a write-up of the results

You receive the agreed tables and charts with commentary on the results. I adapt statistical notation, labels, captions, and the order of analysis to university guidelines, including APA where required.

Benefit: material for further work on your chapter, with an explanation of the methods used.

Reviewing an existing analysis

Already have calculations but your supervisor has raised concerns? I compare the research questions, dataset, and report. I check the choice of tests, whether the tables agree with the text, and whether the conclusions go beyond the data.

Benefit: you know which revisions are needed before reworking the whole research section.

The research question guides the method

Chi-square, Student’s t-test, or correlation?

Not every survey needs the same calculations. The measurement scale, number of groups, dependence between observations, and data distribution all matter. The examples below illustrate possible uses; they are not a ready-made recipe for every thesis.

When should I use the chi-square test and when Fisher's exact test?

Example: is participation in training associated with choosing a specific answer? I will prepare a cross-tabulation with frequencies and percentages, check expected frequencies, and verify the independence of observations. If the chi-square approximation is inappropriate, I will consider an exact method, such as Fisher's test. I will supplement the p-value with an appropriate measure of association strength, such as Cramer's V.

When should I use Student's t-test and when Welch's t-test?

Example: do two groups differ in mean scale score? I will distinguish between independent samples and repeated measures from the same individuals. For independent groups with unequal variances, Welch's test can be applied. For pre- and post-measures, within-pair differences are important. I will base the assessment on the distribution, outliers, and sample size, not solely on one normality test.

When should I use Pearson's correlation and when Spearman's?

Example: are higher stress levels associated with lower satisfaction? Pearson's correlation describes a linear relationship between quantitative variables. Spearman's correlation is based on ranks and assesses monotonic relationships, including those involving ordinal data. Before selecting the method, I will consider the measurement scale. I will check the scatter plot and the possible influence of outliers. Correlation alone does not establish causation.

When should I use ANOVA and post hoc comparisons?

Example: comparing scale scores between three occupational groups. I will select the analysis variant to match the study design and assumptions. If further comparisons are justified, I will include an appropriate post hoc procedure and address the issue of multiple testing. I will not treat repeated measures as independent groups.

When should I use non-parametric tests based on ranks?

Depending on the data and the question, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, or Friedman tests may be useful. Each corresponds to a different arrangement of groups and measurements. I do not automatically interpret every rank test as a comparison of medians; such a conclusion requires additional assumptions.

When is scale reliability analysed and regression applied?

For multi-item questionnaires, scale consistency can be assessed, for example using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. An alpha result is not standalone evidence of the tool's validity. If the question involves several predictors, I will check the possibility of applying regression. I will define the scope after evaluating the sample size, variables, and model assumptions.

Results you can explain

The explanation goes beyond “p < 0.05”

Where appropriate, the write-up also covers the direction of a difference or association, effect size, and confidence intervals. This helps you understand what the result means for your research question and the uncertainty involved.

A statistically non-significant result is still a result. It does not automatically mean there is no association or that your thesis contains an error. I report what the data show, without adjusting the calculations to obtain the hoped-for support for a hypothesis.

How should you describe the research in your thesis?

From describing the sample to answering the research questions

I organise the results so readers can see who took part in the study, what the data show, and how this answers the research questions. I adapt the chapter structure to university guidelines and supervisor feedback. The work can cover:

  1. The sample and data completenessThe number of people or observations analysed, group characteristics, missing responses, and any exclusions.
  2. Describing the study variablesCounts and percentages, or appropriate measures of location and variability. Each table has a title, clear labels, and the denominator used for percentages.
  3. Analysis aligned with the questions and hypothesesAn explanation of what was compared, which method was used, and why. Test results with the correct notation, p-value, and effect size.
  4. A brief interpretationWhat does the result mean in the study sample? What is the direction of the association or difference? Which limitations need to be considered?
  5. Summary of findingsAnswers to the thesis questions. Comparisons with the literature and broader explanations belong in the discussion, following the structure required by your university.

Example structure for reporting a correlation

“To assess the relationship between [variable A] and [variable B], we used [coefficient and rationale]. In the study sample, we obtained [coefficient value, sample size, p-value and confidence interval, if calculated]. The result indicates [the direction and strength of the relationship].”

This is a template to fill with actual results, not a ready-made study finding. The notation and interpretation depend on the method used.

The study type comes before the method

Which subjects can benefit from statistical analysis?

Statistics is appropriate when you have quantitative data and want to describe results, compare groups, or investigate associations. Your subject or master’s thesis title alone does not make statistical tests a requirement.

Psychology

In questionnaire-based research: scale scores, associations between characteristics, and group comparisons. The analysis can include correlations, tests of differences, and assessment of the research instrument’s reliability.

Support in “Psychology”

Sociology

In surveys and quantitative data analysis: response distributions, cross-tabulations, associations between variables, and comparisons of social groups. I do not replace in-depth interview analysis with statistical tests.

Support in “Sociology”

Nursing

In survey and measurement studies: knowledge levels, scale scores, group comparisons, and changes before and after health education. An individual case study does not automatically require statistical tests.

Do you perform statistical analyses for other fields of study as well?

Quantitative methods are also used in theses in management, physiotherapy, and dietetics, among others. Please send the topic, research plan, and data. I will first assess whether the project fits within the scope of support, rather than assigning the same tests to all fields.

Does every survey or thesis require statistical tests?

No. The scope of the analysis depends on the aim of the work and the research questions. Sometimes counts, percentages, and descriptive statistics are enough. If the study concerns differences or relationships, we check which methods are appropriate for the data and whether the conditions for their application are met.

A thesis based on interpreting regulations, a literature review, qualitative analysis of interviews, or an individual case study may not require testing statistical hypotheses. In qualitative research, the analysis may focus on the meaning of the statements. In that case, the appropriate support may be methodology, material analysis, or text editing. I do not add calculations just to make the thesis look more scientific or advanced.

Does the scope of statistical analysis depend on whether I am writing a bachelor's or a master's thesis?

The scope is determined by the research questions and faculty guidelines. A bachelor's thesis may only require descriptive statistics, but some projects require tests. A master's thesis can also be qualitative or theoretical.

Have you not yet collected your data? Explore the service “Help with your thesis methodology chapter”. It is worth linking the analysis plan to the questionnaire before you distribute it.

A scope tailored to your needs

One analysis, a full quantitative section, or revisions after supervisor feedback

You do not need to commission a whole chapter if you only need help with one question. I define the scope based on the data, study design, and calculations and explanations already prepared.

A specific hypothesis or comparison

You can ask me to select and carry out an analysis of one association or a difference between groups. This includes checking the necessary assumptions, reporting the result with appropriate notation and explaining its meaning. A dataset of individual observations and a description of the variables are needed before I can quote a price.

All calculations or a review of an existing report

For a full analysis, I combine dataset preparation, a description of the sample, analyses that address the thesis questions, tables, and interpretation. For revisions, I compare the data, calculations, text, and supervisor feedback. I establish what can be retained and what needs to be recalculated or rewritten.

Before starting, I agree on how the tables, charts, write-up and any analysis files will be delivered. If you also need a broader discussion of your results in relation to the literature or editing of the whole chapter, combine the calculations with the service “Analysis and presentation of research results for your thesis”.

Fewer follow-up questions, a smoother start

What should you send for a statistical analysis quote?

Ideally, send a dataset with each person’s responses rather than just screenshots of charts. Usually, each row represents one person and columns represent variables. For repeated measurements, it must be possible to link results from the same person.

The price depends on the data preparation needed, the number and complexity of analyses, the extent of the write-up, and the deadline. You do not need to count the tests yourself to obtain a quote. Show me the material and explain what your supervisor requires.

Discuss the analysis and price

Include what you already have

  • Data: an XLSX or CSV file, such as responses exported from a form.
  • Research instrument: the questionnaire, scale names, and scoring key.
  • Aim: research questions and hypotheses, if formulated.
  • Requirements: university guidelines, supervisor feedback, and the expected format.
  • Deadline: the date by which you need the work.

Before commissioning an analysis

Statistical analysis – questions and answers

Do I need to know which statistical test to commission?

No. Not every thesis requires statistical tests. Please send the research questions, hypotheses, the survey, and the database. I will check the type of variables, group structure, and method assumptions, and then propose an analysis that corresponds to the research objective.

What is the difference between the chi-square test and the Student's t-test?

The chi-square test of independence examines the association between categorical variables based on frequencies. The t-test is used to compare the means of a quantitative variable. The variant of the test depends, among other things, on whether the groups being compared are independent or whether two measurements of the same individuals are being analysed.

Are charts from Google Forms sufficient for statistical tests?

Usually, a database of individual responses is required, for example an export to XLSX or CSV. Aggregate charts alone often do not allow reconstructing relationships between answers or calculating correlations. Please also send the questionnaire and the scoring key for scales, if used.

How many people are needed for statistical analysis in a master's thesis?

There is no single number suitable for every thesis. The planned test, the number and size of groups, the expected effect size, and the required power and precision of the analysis are important. A small sample limits inference. It is best to discuss the sample size before starting data collection.

How much does statistical analysis for a degree thesis cost?

I will prepare a quote after reviewing the database and research questions. The cost depends on data cleaning, the number and complexity of analyses, the scope of tables and description, and the deadline. I do not price the service based solely on the number of pages in the thesis.

What will I receive after the statistical analysis is completed?

I agree the scope before starting. It may include a prepared dataset, descriptive statistics, test results, tables, charts, a description of the methods and interpretation in relation to the research questions. We agree the format of editable files and any materials from the software when I prepare the quote.

Does the analysis have to be performed in SPSS or Statistica?

There is no single mandatory program for all Polish universities. The correctness of the method and the requirements for your thesis are important. If your supervisor requires a specific program or output file, please specify this before the quote so I can confirm feasibility.

Unsure what to do with the data you have collected?

Send your dataset, topic, and supervisor feedback. I will check which analyses are justified and set out the support available. You can leave the calculations to me and use the time for other responsibilities and understanding the results of your thesis.
