Questionnaire design for your thesis

Have a topic and need a questionnaire for your bachelor’s or master’s thesis? We prepare questions, response options, instructions, and relevant background questions. We can also review a draft questionnaire and improve its alignment with your aims, research questions, and planned analysis of the results.

Questions that collect the data you need

Prepare your questionnaire before starting the study

Choose the support you need

A new questionnaire or revisions to an existing one

A questionnaire from scratch

We work from the agreed research design. We tailor questions and response formats to the participant group, research questions, and information your thesis needs.

Reviewing an existing questionnaire

We compare the questions with the study design. We identify gaps, unclear wording, leading questions, and problems with the questionnaire structure.

Revisions following supervisor feedback

We analyse the feedback and propose revisions to the relevant parts. If response collection has already begun, we first assess how changes could affect data comparability.

What you receive

What does a research questionnaire include?

We agree on the scope before starting. The prepared material can include:

Questionnaire content

  • An introduction and instructions for participants.
  • Closed questions, open questions, or a justified combination.
  • Suitable response options, filter questions, and question order.
  • Background questions limited to information the study needs.

Links to the study design

  • An explanation of what information each question collects.
  • Alignment with the research questions, variables, and indicators.
  • Consideration of hypotheses where justified by the project.
  • A check that the responses will be suitable for the planned analysis.

Material for review

  • A questionnaire in the agreed format for further work.
  • Notes on anything requiring a decision or further information.
  • Guidance on what to check in a pilot study before distribution.

You receive a questionnaire matched to the study aim and participant group. Tell us how you intend to reach participants so we can account for this in the questions, instructions, and questionnaire format. Analysis of the collected responses can be commissioned as a later stage.

Before distributing the form

Start with the research question, then questions for respondents

The questionnaire should gather information needed to answer the thesis questions. We do not base its length on a universal number of questions. We check whether it covers the necessary issues and whether participants can answer without guessing.

  • We separate questions about different issues rather than combine them in one sentence.
  • We check whether response options fit the question and participant group.
  • We limit unnecessary questions and information that could identify participants.
  • We plan filter questions and what to do when an issue does not apply to a respondent.
  • Before release, we recommend a pilot to identify unclear questions and technical problems.

We prepare an original questionnaire for the specific thesis design. If the project needs an existing standardised scale, we check its suitability and terms of use. Any need for validation, adaptation, or a licence is discussed when agreeing on the scope.

How we work

From the research design to a questionnaire for participants

  1. We review the research framework

Send the topic, aim, research questions, and a description of the participant group. We establish what you want to investigate and how you intend to use the responses. We identify missing elements of the design before writing questions.

  2. We prepare the questionnaire

We develop the agreed questions, response options, instructions, and background section. We check the order and how the questionnaire relates to the thesis aim.

  3. We send the material for review

You receive the questionnaire with notes for further checks. Discuss it with your supervisor and test it in a pilot before collecting responses. The scope of revisions is agreed when you place the order.

Your first message

What should you send for questionnaire design?

  • Your topic, type of thesis, and field of study.
  • The aim, research questions, variables, and hypotheses, if these have been established.
  • A description of the group and how you intend to reach participants.
  • Your draft questionnaire, university guidelines, and supervisor feedback.
  • Details of the planned analysis, distribution method, and deadline.

If you only have a topic, you do not need to fill every gap before contacting us. We establish whether the order also needs a research design. Setting up the questions in an online form is discussed separately, including the settings needed and how it will be handed over.

The next stages

Connect your questionnaire with methodology and analysis

If you need a description of the full research design, explore the service “Help with your thesis methodology chapter”. It is worth discussing the analysis plan before collecting data: Statistical analysis for bachelor’s and master’s theses. For tables, charts, and a write-up of responses you have already collected, see Analysis and presentation of research results for your thesis. We agree on each of these services based on the actual materials.

Is the questionnaire part of a standalone assignment for a course or seminar? If you also need the design and written documentation for that assignment, explore the service “Research projects”.

Questions about scope and preparing materials

Can I commission the preparation of a survey or questionnaire?

Yes. We prepare surveys, questionnaires, and other research tools for bachelor's theses, master's theses, and coursework. You can commission just the tool.

We need the topic, aim, research questions and any hypotheses that have been established. We tailor the questions to the research design, variables and indicators so you can collect the data needed for analysis. If the design is not yet ready, developing it can be included in the agreed support.

Can I request a review of just the questionnaire?

Yes. Please provide the questionnaire, the topic, the objective, the research questions, and information about the target group. I will check whether the questions allow you to collect the necessary information and whether the instrument is consistent with the research assumptions.

Must a survey have 20 or 30 questions?

No. The number of questions is justified by the scope of the research, not a universal limit. Remove unnecessary items, but check if the remaining ones still allow you to answer all research problems. Agree on thesis requirements with your supervisor.

Can I modify questions after starting the research?

Changing the meaning of a question or the set of answers may make results before and after the change non-comparable. Record the scope and date of the change and agree on further action with your supervisor. It is best to catch such problems in the pilot phase.

What will I receive when I commission a research questionnaire?

The agreed scope may include questions, response options, instructions, participant background questions and routing, as well as notes on how the questions relate to the research design. We provide the material in the agreed format for further checking and discussion with your supervisor. Collecting responses and analysing the results are not automatically included in questionnaire preparation.

Does questionnaire preparation include setting it up as an online form?

Not automatically. Transferring questions to a chosen form, setting filters, and checking functionality must be included in the scope of the commission. Before starting, we agree on how the instrument will be delivered, the required settings, and access organisation. A file with questions does not mean the survey is published.

What type of questionnaire do you prepare for a survey?

We can prepare a custom questionnaire tailored to the aim and research questions, or plan how to use an existing scale. For an existing instrument, we check its intended purpose, available language version and conditions of use. We determine the type of questionnaire, question structure, response options and method of processing the data based on the research concept.

How do you adapt the questionnaire to the respondent group?

Please send a description of the group your survey is intended for and the research aim. We adapt the wording of the questions, response options, demographic questions and instructions to the participants and the way the survey will be conducted. We take the planned respondent group and method of collecting responses into account when preparing the instrument within the agreed scope.
