Bachelor's vs master's thesis in Poland: what changes in the writing?

A master's thesis does not become stronger by adding pages. Compare how the research question, evidence, analysis and limits can change within the same subject area.

Compare the scope and reasoning expected of the work, rather than relying on page count alone.

The main difference between a bachelor's and a master's thesis is how the problem is developed: the scope of the question, the justification for decisions and the depth of analysis. Page count and a longer reference list do not, by themselves, show that the work meets your programme's expectations. Check current faculty guidance and your supervisor's instructions before setting the scope.

If you are starting a master's thesis after a bachelor's degree, do not simply transfer your previous structure into a new document. Establish what you now need to identify, compare or explain. The paired example below shows two original, hypothetical approaches to one subject. It is not a client project, a set of research findings or a template required by every Polish university.

The degree level provides context; the programme sets the task

In Poland's study structure, licencjat is a first-cycle qualification, while magister follows second-cycle or long-cycle studies. The official Study.gov.pl portal describes this broad distinction. It does not establish a universal chapter structure, compulsory questionnaire or standard thesis length for every programme.

This guide addresses programmes that require a written thesis. Do not transfer requirements from a management bachelor's programme directly to nursing, education or language studies. Two master's theses can also use very different material: documents, a case study, original research or a critical literature-based analysis. Your point of reference is the task defined for your own programme, including any approved disciplinary conventions.

Collect six specific decisions before you start

Do not ask only how many pages you need. Request the current faculty guidelines, seminar requirements, assessment criteria or the document you should follow. Record its title and version. A former student's thesis may illustrate presentation choices, but it cannot replace the requirements that apply to your project now.

If two instructions appear inconsistent, send both passages to your supervisor and explain the practical consequence. Clarifying whether you should compare two cases is more useful than adding a chapter simply to make the document look more substantial. Keep confirmed decisions with the project files so that later changes can be checked against them.

  • Which thesis type and evidence are permitted by the programme and seminar?
  • What should independent analysis demonstrate, and how will it be assessed?
  • Are there specific rules for selecting sources, methods or the structure?
  • Which formatting, language and citation requirements apply?
  • Which approvals, data-protection rules or access conditions need checking?
  • When are the topic, outline and successive sections approved?

One subject area, two different research tasks

Consider information provided on an academic library's website. Both versions concern access to information, but the question and evidence are framed differently. The examples show choices an author needs to make. Neither version automatically qualifies a topic for a particular degree or predicts how an examiner will assess the finished work.

Bachelor's version: a structured examination of one case

Question: what information needed to borrow and renew a book independently is available on one selected library's website? The scope covers a single site, its state on the review date and a set of categories justified by the literature and the project's purpose.

Material: publicly available rules, instructions and notices. The author explains how pages were located, records the access date and applies the same criteria to every item. Missing information or inconsistent instructions can be identified where the material actually supports that finding, rather than assumed because a page looks old or crowded.

Limit: the findings concern this website and this review. They do not establish the library's overall effectiveness, all students' satisfaction or the causes of user behaviour. A carefully developed narrow case can provide a clearer answer than a broad subject for which the author has no suitable evidence.

Master's version: explaining differences between sources of evidence

Question: how is information organisation on two comparable library websites associated with performance on specified information tasks? The author justifies case selection, task comparability and differences that could complicate the comparison. The design does not assume in advance that one site will perform better or that design alone explains the outcome.

Material: a systematic website review together with records of appropriately selected participants completing the same tasks, where the project and required approvals permit it. Analysis relates site features to observations. A clear-looking instruction paired with difficult task completion becomes a discrepancy to investigate, rather than an inconvenient result to remove.

Limit: comparison alone does not demonstrate causation. Previous experience, familiarity with the library and task conditions may matter. Greater analytical depth means considering those explanations and limitations, rather than claiming representativeness without a suitable basis or treating every observed difference as an effect of the website.

Choose literature for its role in the argument

The first version needs sources that define information categories and justify the website-review criteria. The second also needs discussion of how successful information retrieval is understood and why similar tasks may produce different outcomes. Adding newer publications to the same collection of summaries would not, on its own, deepen the reasoning.

For each publication, identify its function: a definition, an analytical criterion, previous evidence, a limitation or a competing explanation. If it supports no decision or argument, its presence in the reference list adds little. Your faculty may specify particular source requirements, but a numerical total cannot establish whether the selected evidence answers the research question.

The separate guide to a thesis literature review explains how to connect authors' positions. Here, the earlier decision matters: which kinds of evidence will be needed to answer this particular question? Comparing degree levels should not become a competition to assemble the longest bibliography or repeat the most definitions.

Deeper analysis does not automatically require a larger survey

Choose methods for the question and material, not for the word master's on the title page. A questionnaire can be appropriate, but it is not the default solution to every thesis problem. Document analysis requires a defensible selection and comparison procedure. A task-based study requires a clear procedure and an agreed way of recording what happens.

In the library example, combining a website review with user tasks only makes sense when both sources of material address the same question. A second method without that connection creates two separate activities rather than a deeper analysis. Check access to participants and material, as well as any required approvals, before treating the design as feasible.

Harvard College Writing Center describes an analytical question as one that calls for reasoning and can be explored using available sources. For a degree thesis, this is a useful planning check: can your material address the problem, or can it only describe an interesting subject? It is general writing guidance, not a regulation governing Polish programmes.

Show why the evidence supports the conclusion

Description records what is present in the material. Analysis explains what an identified feature means in relation to your question and criteria. The sentence 'information about renewing a loan appears in three places' records an observation. Examining whether those passages agree and how they relate to the user journey allows a more considered interpretation.

Do not replace an observation with an unsupported causal claim. The number of locations does not show that users feel confused. That claim would require evidence about user behaviour or experience. Without it, label the possible consequence as something to investigate, or restrict the conclusion to how the information is organised and presented.

Before expanding a subsection, state its purpose in one sentence. Then check whether its final paragraph delivers that purpose. The separate guide to thesis structure covers the overall organisation. There is no need to repeat the whole outlining process here: the important point is that each section performs a clear task within this project.

Check the design before expanding the draft

On one page, connect the question, material, method and type of answer you expect to produce. If a link is missing, return to the design decision rather than adding general background. This check also helps you decide which parts of earlier work provide useful context and which need to be developed afresh for the new question.

Do not transfer your previous text into a new thesis without checking your university's rules on reusing material. Record where an earlier passage or dataset came from and discuss an acceptable approach with your supervisor. That is a different decision from editing the language of an existing paragraph, and it should be resolved before substantial drafting continues.

  • Does the question need more than a collection of definitions?
  • Can you identify evidence for every planned conclusion?
  • Can you justify the case selection and method?
  • Can you name an alternative explanation of the result?
  • Is the scope feasible with the material you can obtain?

Match writing support to the decision you need to make

If the new project's scope is unclear, begin with the question and outline. The relevant service is Help with your thesis outline and structure. When the question is settled but methods, findings and discussion do not fit together, the task may require Thesis research section: methodology, results and discussion. The degree label alone does not explain what needs to be prepared.

At Student Support, I can compare your topic, guidelines and available material with the work you need. Through Bachelor’s and master’s thesis writing, we can agree whether you need selected chapters, development of your own draft or a broader model document. Before starting, I confirm the deliverables, sources, file format and deadline with you.

Questions about scope and thesis writing support

How many chapters should a bachelor's or master's thesis have?

There is no single number suitable for all fields of study. Three chapters in a bachelor's thesis and four in a master's thesis are not a universal rule. The division should result from the topic, the objective, the nature of the work, and the faculty guidelines.

More important than the number is whether each chapter fulfils a specific part of the objective. If the university requires a specific structure, it must be followed.

Must chapters have the same number of pages?

No. They should have the length necessary to fulfil their tasks. Large disparities are worth checking, but they should not be fixed by adding unnecessary content. It is more important to adequately develop the core analysis.

How does the preparation of a commissioned thesis work?

I start with the topic, requirements, available materials and deadline. I agree on the structure and the elements to prepare: introduction, theory, methodology, research findings, conclusion, references and appendices. I then develop the agreed sections and bring them together in a coherent document.

You can commission a complete thesis, one chapter or further development of your version. Before work begins, I confirm the scope, price, file format and how you will receive the material.

Can correcting one chapter require changes in other parts of the thesis?

Yes. A change to the objective, a concept or the interpretation of a finding may affect the introduction, methodology, discussion or conclusion. I check those connections and agree which sections the work will cover. I do not extend the scope to the whole document without your agreement.

Can you work with an outline approved by my supervisor?

Yes. I treat it as a starting point and take into account the elements that must remain in the thesis. If I see a need for a larger structural change, I will present a proposal for discussion with the supervisor.

How much does thesis writing support cost in Poland? Scope and getting a quote

The same page count can mean editing finished writing, rebuilding an argument or checking research material. Learn how to compare support scopes and prepare a useful thesis enquiry. When comparing master's or bachelor's thesis writing support, compare the tasks before comparing the figures. Discussing a research idea, developing a missing section and editing a completed chapter are different assignments. This guide explains what to send, how to read a proposed scope and how to avoid agreeing on a price without understanding what will be delivered. A page measures document length, not the entire assignment. One page may contain a coherent argument and complete references. Another may require checking terminology, locating the cited publications, resolving a contradiction with the methods and only then editing the wording. Equal length does not mean equal work, even when both files look equally polished on screen. Also ask what a page means in that particular quote: a page in your existing file, a specified character count or the expected length of new material. If two quotes use different units, align their scopes first. A lower rate may cover a narrower task, such as proofreading rather than developing content, and may therefore be impossible to compare directly. You do not need a perfect document to make an initial enquiry. You need an accurate picture of its current state. Mention what is missing too: an unapproved proposal, an unavailable source or research that has not yet been conducted. This separates tasks that can begin now from work that depends on later decisions or evidence. The label 'master's thesis' does not determine the price by itself. A chapter based on available literature, an analysis of real data and a document-based study involve different work. An urgent deadline cannot replace missing research material either. Establish what can genuinely be prepared rather than assuming that every assignment can be completed from any starting point. The following situations are fictional teaching examples, not client cases or a price list. Assume that each chapter is ten pages long in the same document layout. No monetary amount is calculated from that number. The...
